BARBARA J. ALEX - ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I was born in New Britain, Connecticut. Growing up, I was influenced by my grandmother an art & music teacher, who painted china and woodburned plaques, and by my great uncle who was a portrait painter and landscape artist.
I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Hartford Art School of the University of Hartford. While in college, I taught children’s art classes at the New Britain Art League. I later studied watercolor at the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art in Wethersfield. I continue to take workshops and classes to further enhance my artistic skills.
My favorite subjects and mediums are portraits in oil, and landscapes in watercolor and pastels. I also enjoy experimenting with many different mediums such as foil and acrylics, cold wax with oil, alcohol ink, multi-media, and bas-relief terra cotta figures.
My inspiration with portraits comes from observing the subtleties that distinguish that particular person from all others: the glint in the eyes, the tilt of the head, the laughter lines. With my watercolor landscapes, I choose subjects that stimulate me to capture them forever as living memories to where I have been and my desire to share those feelings with people viewing my paintings. I enjoy developing my artistic skill with various watercolor papers, and styles of painting.
I am a juried member of the Connecticut Watercolor Society, an associate member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, a juried member and former council member of Connecticut Women Artists, a founding member of the East Haddam Art League, a current member and past President of Windsor Palette and Brush Club.
